Oh yeah I miss those. So easy to remember. The bash modifiers are murderous (hard to remember), I agree. Maybe that's cause I started on tcsh myself.

Aside from using the arcane posix syntax , you can always use the utililties `basename' which I found an example of <a href="http://stackoverflow.com/questions/125281/how-do-i-remove-the-file-suffix-and-path-portion-from-a-path-string-in-bash" rel="nofollow">here</a>

That's pretty cool. I hadn't heard of seq. I'll play with that.

I always found tcsh filename modifiers very useful. simply :r :e :h :t for root, extension, head and tail respectively. But bash is overall a better shell so I switched, but then found the bash filename modifiers suck. So I made some bash functions to emulate the tcsh filename modifiers as close as possible. You may be interested. They can be chained too like tcsh.

See here: my answer here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5147161/how-can-i-chain-together-filename-modifiers-in-a-bash-shell

Yeah, I tend to write these thing after a beer or two (and hours of frustration so I don't forget). It could be clearer.

Indeed one SHOULD NOT install the .deb from the link above. Rather extract the .deb and copy the libX11* files into the $NR_SHAKE_LOCATION/lib/ (this way the linker finds them) - I could see how the post may lead some astray into screwing up their systems. I would hope that apt would complain horribly about this though - suggesting to remove a thousand packages or something.

thanks for the feedbacks. I gotta get me a fancy face icon.

Hey Pink. You forgot to mention that by replacing the library many of your X clients use might break other programs that expect the newer interface. So if you only expect to sun Shake on the machine then you'll be fine, otherwise, beware of strange crashing programs.
